1. Meerschaum is a light-weight stone that is actually fossilized sea shells compressed with layer after layer of silt.
2. As it ages, meerschaum colors a rich honey-brown, improving both in appearance and taste.
3. Meerschaum deposits of the highest quality are found only in one place in the world - in the small city of Eskisehir in central Turkey. Since the 1970s, though, Turkey has banned the exportation of meerschaum nodules, trying to set up a local meerschaum industry.
4. Other names for Meerschaum include: Sepiolite, Venus of the Sea, White Goddess, sea foam, Aktas, Eskisehir's Stone, Lületaşı, Patal, Pierre de savon Maroc (rock of Morrocan sopa), and Vienna Stone.
